Milford Commandery No. 11

The members of Milford Commandery No. 11 are Knights Templar, a Christian-oriented fraternal organization that was founded in the 11th century. All Knights Templar are members of the world's oldest fraternal organization known as The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons or more commonly known as Masons. However, not all Masons are Knights Templar. Currently,Templar membership consists of people from all walks of life, including doctors, lawyers, clergy, businessmen and entertainment personalities, all of whom profess a belief in the Christian Religion.

Originally, the Knights Templar were laymen who protected and defended Christians travelling to Jerusalem. These men took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and were renowned for their fierceness and courage in battle. Today, the Knights Templar display their courage and goodwill in other ways. They organize fund-raising activities such as breakfasts, dinners, dances, and flea markets. They support Masonic-related youth groups and they raise millions of dollars for medical eye research and educational assistance.

Milford Commandery of Knights Templar No. 11 was chartered on October 28, 1859 by the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of Massachusetts and Rhode Island (now the Grand Commandery) under Winslow Lewis, Most Eminent Grand Master (now Right Eminent Grand Commander). The original designation was as an Encampment of Knights Templar and Councils of the Appendant Orders.

Over the 150 plus years of its existence, Milford Commandery has produced two Grand Commanders, one Northeast Department Commander and currently has some five members serving the Grand Commandery in various officer or committee positions. Also winner of the prestigious Warren B. Wilson Award for the best Inspection and Review 2013-2014 issued by the Grand Inspector Instructor, Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. An active and vibrant commandery, it performs all of the Orders in full and complete form, including costumes when appropriate. Milford No. 11 is a staunch supporter of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation and has received 4 Golden Chalices and a Sword of Merit in recognition of its efforts.

To support this charitable effort, Milford Commandery No. 11 offers a wide selection of Templar merchandise including summer uniforms, uniform brass, name tags and a number of other items. All profits from these sales go to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. For further information click on the Our Store link to the right.
